WOLLONGONG MOULD REMOVAL SERVICES
Mould Cleaning in Wollongong
Whether a clean will actually fix it comes down to what the mould is growing on.
Trusted Mould Cleaning in The Illawarra, NSW
There’s a patch on the ceiling. Maybe a dark bloom on the wall behind the wardrobe, or grey creeping through the grout. You want it gone, you want it gone properly, and you’d rather not spend more than the job needs.
Fair enough. So here’s the thing that decides it.
Mould on a tile wipes off and stays off. Mould on unsealed timber, plasterboard paper, silicone or fabric has grown roots down inside the material, and no cleaner on earth reaches that. Same mould, same room, completely different job. Surface versus soaked in, that’s the whole question, and it’s what tells you whether you need a clean or remediation.
Wollongong Mould Cleaning & Removal has operated for 15 years in and around Wollongong and that’s still the first thing we work out on any job.
Sometimes the answer is that you’ve got a straightforward clean and you’ll have your ceiling back this afternoon. We’ll tell you when that’s the case.
Does this sound like you?
- Visible mould on ceilings, walls, tiles or grout that you want dealt with properly
- Black spots that keep reappearing after you've scrubbed them
- A musty smell that lingers even after cleaning
- Mould on window frames, sills, or the wall behind furniture
- Mould through the wardrobe, on clothes, curtains or soft furnishings
- A house that's just been remediated and you want the leftover dust and spores cleared out
- You've been quoted for a big job and want a second opinion on whether it's really needed

Mould Cleaning or Mould Remediation, Which Do You Need?
Most companies keep this vague, because vague sells the bigger job. We’d rather draw the line clearly.
Mould cleaning deals with mould sitting on a surface. The growth is on top of the material, not in it, and the moisture that caused it is either gone or about to be fixed. Wipe it, treat it, done.
Mould remediation deals with mould that’s got into the material, keeps returning, or is tied to an active moisture problem. Cleaning that mould is money spent on a result that lasts a fortnight. The material has to come out, or the cause has to be dealt with, or both.
The deciding factor is what the mould is growing on:
- Non-porous: Tiles, glass, metal, sealed benchtops, glazed surfaces. Mould can’t get in, so it sits on the surface. Clean it and it’s gone.
- Semi-porous: Painted plasterboard, sealed timber, painted brick. Catch it early and a clean works. Leave it long enough for the growth to get through the paint film and into the board behind, and it doesn’t.
- Porous: Unsealed timber, the paper facing on plasterboard, grout, silicone, carpet, fabric, insulation. Mould roots down inside these. You can bleach the stain out and it’ll look fine for a week, but the growth is still in there. These materials get replaced, not cleaned.
That’s why a bathroom ceiling and a bathroom tile can have the same mould and need completely different work. And it’s why we look at the material before we quote a price.
Not sure what you’ve got? The inspection’s free. If it’s a clean, we’ll say so, and if it’s more than that, mould inspection and testing will tell us how far it’s gone.
How Our Mould Cleaning Process Works
We check the material first
Porous, semi-porous or non-porous, and how deep the growth has gone. This decides whether a clean is honest work or a waste of your money.
We look for the moisture
A clean only lasts if whatever wet the surface has stopped. If we find an active leak or a ventilation problem, we’ll tell you, because otherwise you’ll be ringing us again.
We contain the area where it matters
Scrubbing mould releases spores. On anything more than a small patch we seal the area and run HEPA filtration, so what comes off the wall doesn’t end up in the next room.
We clean and treat the surface
Antimicrobial treatment matched to the material, so we’re not stripping paint off plasterboard or bleaching timber.
We tell you how to keep it away
Practical, specific to your place. If the cause needs ongoing management, that’s mould prevention.
We Don't Just Wipe the Surface. We Check What's Underneath It
Anybody with a spray bottle can make a mould stain disappear. The stain going is not the same as the mould going.
Bleach is the classic example. It lifts the colour out of the growth, so the surface looks clean, and on a tile that’s fine because the mould was only ever sitting on top. On plasterboard or timber it’s close to useless, because bleach is mostly water. The colour goes, the water soaks in, and the growth underneath gets a drink. Which is why the patch is back in a fortnight, sometimes bigger.
So before we clean anything, we work out whether cleaning is actually the right call. A moisture meter on the wall behind the patch. A look at whether the growth has gone through the paint film. A read on whether the material can be saved.
Sometimes that means telling you the ceiling needs to come out and we can’t fix it with a clean. Sometimes, more often than you’d think, it means telling you the job is smaller than you feared and you’ll have it back today. Either way you get the truth about your house, not a quote shaped around what we’d like to sell you.
What a Mould Clean Covers
A proper clean isn’t only the patch you can see. Three things come with it, because leaving them out is why people think the mould came back.
Removing the smell
That musty odour isn’t the mould itself. It’s the gases the growth gives off, and it soaks into soft materials and lingers long after the visible patch is gone. If the smell is still there after a clean, something’s still growing, usually somewhere you can’t see. We treat the source rather than spraying over it, and we’ll chase the smell if the visible mould doesn’t explain it.
Clean curtains, blinds and soft furnishings
Fabric is porous, so mould gets right into the weave. Curtains near a mouldy window, clothes in an affected wardrobe, and blinds in a damp bathroom all hold spores. Some of it washes out at a hot enough temperature. Some of it doesn’t, and we’ll tell you honestly when something’s better replaced than saved. We handle the fabric alongside the room, because cleaning the wall and leaving the curtains is how it reseeds.
The clean-up afterwards
Once mould has been disturbed, spores settle through the house as dust. A normal vacuum blows them straight back out through the exhaust. We run HEPA filtration and vacuum the affected areas properly so the job actually ends, and this is the step we do after any remediation work too.
Mould Cleaning for Every Part of the House
Different rooms, different surfaces, different problems. Here’s where to go for yours.
- Black spots creeping across the ensuite ceiling, or grout that won’t come clean? That’s our bathroom mould removal service, and it’s the most common call we get.
- Mould overhead, spreading out from a corner or around the light fitting? Start with our ceiling mould removal treatment.
- Dark patches on the walls, behind furniture, or along the skirting? Have a look at our wall mould removal service.
- Green or black growth on render, cladding, fences or the shady side of the house? That’s our exterior mould removal service.
- A musty smell every time the air con kicks on? Mould in the unit and ductwork spreads spores through the whole house, and that’s quite possibly in need of our air conditioning and duct mould removal service.
- Growth that’s gone properly black and you’re worried about what it is? Read up on black mould removal.
If the mould turned up after a leak, a burst pipe, a flood or a storm, the fix starts with water damage restoration.
How Much Does Professional Mould Cleaning Cost?
The inspection is free, so finding out whether you need a clean or something more costs you nothing.
| What you need | What it covers | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| On-site inspection | We check the material, look for the moisture and tell you what it honestly needs | Free |
| Small patch, surface only | One corner of ceiling, a few tiles, a window frame. Often a job you can do yourself | $100 to $300 |
| Single room clean | Contained removal, HEPA filtration and antimicrobial treatment of the whole room | $500 to $1,000 |
| Multiple rooms | Growth through several rooms, or spread into cavities and the roof space | $1,000 to $4,000+ |
Look at that second row. If it’s a small surface patch on tile or paint, you’re looking at a couple of hundred dollars, and you could very likely do it yourself in an afternoon. We’ll say so on the phone rather than send someone out to take your money.
What moves the price: how much surface is affected, whether the material is porous enough to need replacing rather than cleaning, whether the area needs containment, and whether soft furnishings are involved. You get the figure before we start.
If the material has to come out, that’s no longer a clean, and remediation is priced differently.
How Our Local Illawarra Knowledge Sharpens the Job
Coastal air here carries moisture for a good part of the year, which means surfaces stay damp longer and mould gets a head start it wouldn’t get an hour inland. That’s the background to nearly every job we take.
Then there’s the housing. Older weatherboards up the northern beaches that breathe differently to the brick homes through Figtree and Kiama. Newer units near the CBD, sealed tight, trapping condensation in wardrobes and behind furniture. We’re in these places every week, so we’re reading your house against hundreds we’ve already seen rather than a checklist.
That local read is why we can usually tell you on a photo whether you’re looking at a clean or a bigger job.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I just clean the mould myself with bleach?
On tile, glass or another non-porous surface, yes, and it’ll stay gone.
On plasterboard, timber, grout or silicone, no. Bleach lifts the colour so the surface looks clean, but it’s mostly water, and on a porous material the water soaks in and the growth underneath survives. That’s why the patch comes back a fortnight later, sometimes bigger than before.
Will professional mould cleaning damage my walls, paint or surfaces?
No.
We match the treatment to the material, so paint, tiles and finishes come through fine. If the mould itself has already wrecked the surface, which happens with plasterboard that’s been wet a long time, we’ll tell you honestly rather than clean it and hope.
Is the cleaning safe for kids and pets?
Yes.
We use professional-grade products applied the right way, and we’re happy to talk through any specific sensitivities in your household so everyone’s comfortable.
Why does my home keep getting mould even after I clean it?
Because the moisture is still there.
Cleaning removes growth, not the conditions that grew it. A leak, poor ventilation, rising damp or condensation will keep feeding it no matter how often you scrub. If it keeps returning, the answer isn’t a better cleaner, it’s finding the cause.
Will the mould come back after you clean it?
If the moisture that caused it is gone, a proper clean stays clean. If there’s an underlying cause we’ll flag it, and for recurring or embedded growth our mould remediation service deals with the cause rather than the symptom.
How long does a mould clean take?
A single patch is quick, often under an hour.
A full room with containment is usually half a day to a day. Mould through several rooms takes longer, and we’ll give you a clear timeframe when we quote.
The mould is gone but the smell isn't. Why?
Because that smell comes from gases the mould gives off, and it soaks into soft materials and lingers.
If it’s still there after the visible growth is gone, something is usually still growing somewhere you can’t see. That’s worth chasing rather than covering up.
Can you clean mould off curtains, clothes and furniture?
Often, yes.
Fabric is porous so the mould gets into the weave, and a hot enough wash handles a fair bit of it. Some items are too far gone to save, and we’ll tell you when that’s the case rather than charge you to clean something you’ll end up throwing out.
I think there's mould I can't see. Can you check?
Yes. If you’re worried about hidden growth or want to know what’s in your air, mould inspection and testing uses moisture meters, thermal imaging and, where it’s warranted, air sampling to find it.
