15 years in the Illawarra, and straight advice every time
Wollongong Mould Cleaning has spent 15 years removing mould from homes and businesses right across the Illawarra. We’re a local team, based here in Wollongong, and we know exactly why mould takes hold in this part of the world. The coastal humidity, the escarpment holding moisture in, the heavy rainfall that never quite lets a place dry out.
Most mould gets treated on the surface and never properly fixed, which is why it keeps coming back. We work differently. We find what’s causing the mould and shut it off at the source, so it’s gone for good instead of gone for a fortnight. From a single mouldy bathroom ceiling to water damage through an entire home, no job is too big or too tricky for us to take on.
Spotted a dark patch on the ceiling? Noticed a musty smell that won’t shift? You’re in the right place, and the first inspection is free.

Our Mould Removal Services
Six services, one team, covering Wollongong homes and businesses. Whichever one you need, it starts with the same free mould assessment and the same question – what is feeding that damn mould?!
Mould Inspection & Testing
When you cannot see the whole picture, guessing gets expensive. Mould inspection and testing means moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air or surface sampling where it is actually warranted. You get told what is going on and why, in plain English, and where samples go to a lab you get the results explained rather than handed over. Our mould testing services confirm the presence of mould and the extent of the mould before anybody quotes on removing it.
Buying an older place and something smells off in the back rooms? A pre-purchase mould inspection is worth doing before you sign, because building inspections routinely miss moisture inside walls.
Mould Cleaning
The one we get called out for most. Mould cleaning covers visible mould on ceilings, walls, bathrooms, wardrobes and anywhere else it has taken hold.
The difference between us and a spray bottle is what happens underneath. Supermarket products are mostly water, so on anything porous the colour lifts and the growth below gets a drink. We remove it rather than bleaching it, and we contain the area and capture mould spores while we work, so a one-room job does not quietly become a four-room job. The aim is to safely and effectively remove mould without pushing airborne mould spores into the rest of the house, using specialised cleaning solutions matched to the surface rather than one product for everything. Heavier or darker growth runs through black mould removal, and render, brickwork, eaves and fences are exterior mould removal.
Emergency Water Extraction
Standing water is the one job where the hour matters more than the price. A burst pipe or a failed flexi hose under a vanity can put hundreds of litres through a floor before anyone notices, and a high-pressure leak inside a wall cavity soaks the frame and the insulation without ever showing on the surface. Mould can take hold in a couple of days, so what gets pulled out on day one decides what has to be cut out on day ten.
Emergency water extraction is a 24/7 callout with truck-mounted and portable extraction, moisture mapping to find how far the water has actually travelled, and drying equipment left running to a measured target rather than picked up when the carpet feels dry.
We do this for houses and units, and for commercial sites where the floor has to be back in service: offices, retail, warehouses, aged care, strata common areas and basement car parks. If you cannot shut for a week, say so on the phone and we will work the sequence around trading hours. These are the jobs that most often run through insurance, and we document them accordingly.
If there is water on the floor right now, ring us immediately on (02) 4093 0541.
Mould Remediation & Mould Prevention
Some jobs have gone past a clean. It is back in the same spot every winter, it has soaked into timber, or it is riding on a moisture problem that is not going anywhere by itself. Mould remediation is where we remove what cannot be saved and fix what is feeding it. Remediation deals with the root cause of the mould rather than the stain, which is what stops mould from returning.
That is the service behind the harder work: a mouldy subfloor under the house, commercial mould remediation where you cannot afford to shut for a week, strata and body corporate buildings, and rising damp treatment where the damp is wicking up out of the ground.
Remediation also covers the part that keeps it gone. Mould prevention deals with the conditions instead of the stain: ventilation, airflow, the corner that never dries, the exhaust fan venting into the roof space instead of outside. It is how you prevent future mould growth, and the sensible move before a property changes hands or before an end of lease inspection turns into a bond argument.
Water Damage Restoration
When water gets in, the clock starts. Mould can take hold within a couple of days, so how fast it gets dried out properly decides how much you lose.
Water damage restoration covers the lot: burst pipes, flood damage, storm damage, leaking roofs, water damaged carpet, and structural drying and dehumidification with real equipment rather than a pedestal fan and raw optimism. Extraction gets the water out, this is everything that happens after it.
Building Restoration
Once the mould is gone you are sometimes left with what it did on the way through. Crumbled plasterboard, insulation that is past saving, timber that needs making good.
Rather than handing you a list of cleaning services and trades to ring, building restoration puts it back together with us coordinating the licensed trades and one of us as your contact the whole way. That covers plasterboard replacement and insulation replacement after mould, through to the paint.
Water Damage or Flooding Right Now? We Answer 24/7
If water is coming in at two in the morning, ring us then. One of us picks up.
The first thing you get is advice on the phone, straight away, so you know what to do in the next ten minutes and what can wait until we arrive. Turn the mains off, kill the power to wet areas, get things up off the floor, photograph it before you touch anything. Then we get someone from the team out to you as fast as we can.
That phone call is free and it is worth making even if you decide to sort the rest yourself. Half of limiting water damage is what happens before anyone turns up.
Why Mould Removal in Wollongong Has Two Seasons
Everybody in the Illawarra knows this is a mouldy part of the world. Ask why and you will get “it’s humid” and that is about where it stops. The useful version has numbers in it, and it explains why your mould shows up when it does.
Summer Has A Humidity Problem
From November through to March, average 9am relative humidity at Bellambi sits at 70 per cent or higher every month, peaking at 76 per cent in February, as per the Bureau of Meteorology’s long-run averages. Mould needs roughly 70 per cent relative humidity at a surface to get going, per the Australian Building Codes Board’s Condensation in Buildings handbook. So what we see is the air outside is already at the line before you add a shower, a load of washing or a pot on the stove. That is why summer mould turns up in the closed-up places with limited airflow: wardrobes, the back of built-ins, shoes, and spare rooms.
Winter Has A Temperature Problem
Those same averages drop to 56 per cent in August, the driest part of the year, and yet August is when the phone runs hot with ceiling and wall mould. Mould doesn’t care what the room reads, it cares what the surface reads. A wall only has to run about two and a half degrees cooler than the room before the humidity against it crosses 70 per cent, while the wall is still bone dry to a moisture meter.
Two different causes, two different fixes. Cleaning is the same either way, which is why cleaning on its own fails so reliably. If the growth is on a cold outside wall or across a ceiling in winter, the fix is closing the temperature gap: see wall mould removal and ceiling mould removal. If it is turning up in wardrobes and closed-up rooms over summer, that is an airflow problem and mould prevention deals with it. If neither fits, water is getting in from somewhere and we go looking for the leak first.

Why Choose Wollongong Mould Cleaning?
We fix it at the source. Mould can’t grow without moisture, so we trace what’s feeding it – a hidden leak, poor ventilation, condensation or rising damp – and where another trade is needed, we coordinate trusted local plumbers and air conditioning specialists, managing it all for you so the cause is fixed first.
We genuinely care, and we communicate. Inviting someone into your home is a big deal, and we don’t take it lightly. From the first call to the final walkthrough, you’ll always know what we found, what we’re doing and why.
Honest, tailored pricing
Every home and every mould issue is different, so we give you a clear, tailored quote rather than a one-size-fits-all number. We won’t overcharge you, and we won’t cut corners to come in cheap.
Local Illawarra experts
15 years treating mould across Wollongong — from homes and rentals to commercial spaces, and from a single room to a whole building. We know mould, and we know the Illawarra.
Mould and Water Damage Insurance Claims
A fair few of these end up as claims, and we work with the insurers regularly. We document the job the way an assessor needs it: photos before anything is touched, moisture readings, a written scope, and drying logs showing the place was actually dried rather than left to sort itself out. We deal with the assessor directly so you are not stuck relaying messages between us and them.
What we will not do is tell you your claim is covered. That call belongs to your insurer and it comes down to your policy and what caused the water. Sudden events are usually treated differently to something that has been leaking quietly for a year. Ring your insurer early and get us in early too, because the documentation gets much harder once the place has been cleaned up.
This is general information, not advice on your policy.
What Our Customers Say ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does mould removal cost?
Mould removal in Wollongong typically costs between AU$200 and AU$5,000.
A simple, superficial mould clean by a professional sits at the lower end, around AU$200. A full mould remediation project, where the underlying cause is repaired and not just the surface treated, sits at AU$5,000 or above for extreme cases.
There’s no flat rate, because every home and every mould problem is different. Pricing depends on the size of the affected area and what’s causing it underneath. We give you a clear, honest, tailored quote up front. We won’t overcharge you, and we won’t cut corners to come in cheap.
Assessments are always free.
Do you offer free assessments, and how do I get one?
Yes. Tell us what you’re seeing using the contact form above, or call us on (02) 4093 0541, and we’ll point you in the right direction with honest, transparent advice.
Which areas do you service?
We cover Wollongong and the wider Illawarra – from Thirroul and the northern suburbs all the way down through to Dapto and Shellharbour to Kiama, and everywhere in between.
How quickly can you come out?
As soon as we can. And if you’ve got water damage from a burst pipe, leak or storm, let us know straight away.
Acting fast is the best way to stop mould taking hold in the first place.
I've cleaned the same mould over and over and it keeps coming back. Can you actually stop it?
Yes – this is exactly what we specialise in. Mould can’t grow without moisture, so if it keeps returning, the real cause hasn’t been fixed.
Our mould remediation service traces the source, coordinates any repairs needed, and remediates properly so it’s solved for good.
Is the mould in my home a health risk?
Mould can affect indoor air quality and is worth taking seriously, especially for young children or anyone with asthma or allergies. If you’re concerned, our free mould inspection can measure what’s in your air and pinpoint hidden mould before you decide on next steps.
Do you only remove mould, or can you test and repair too?
We handle the whole journey. Inspection and testing, cleaning and removal, full remediation, and the water damage restoration and building repairs that often go with it. One team, from finding the problem to finishing the repair.
Why is there so much mould in Wollongong?
The Illawarra is almost purpose-built for mould: coastal humidity, the escarpment trapping moisture against the suburbs, and heavy rainfall. It’s why local homes need an approach built for these conditions – not a quick surface clean that lets it grow straight back.
